Fast’n Faith in January

January feels like the perfect time to reset—and this year, my church kicked things off with a focus on fasting, faith, prayer, and clarity. I’ve learned that fasting isn’t just about giving something up—it’s about making room. It’s a spiritual cleanse, a way to silence the distractions and invite God to speak.

While traditional fasting often involves food, it can be so much more. You can fast from anything that has taken up too much space in your life: social media, overspending, even toxic habits or relationships. It’s about identifying what you turn to instead of Jesus—and learning to rely on Him again.

For me, this journey started a few years ago, and it wasn’t glamorous. I was burned out, broken physically and mentally, and had spent over a decade giving away every ounce of myself. Slowing down didn’t come naturally—it felt wrong, even selfish. Sitting still for just seven minutes was a struggle. But with time, God met me in the quiet. He didn’t ask me to perform. He asked me to surrender.

That surrender looked different each day—some days it was walking or stretching, others it was just crying out in stillness. I started replacing toxic patterns with healthier ones: worship, reading Scripture, resting, praying, journaling, eating to nourish rather than escape. Slowly, my mind began to heal. So did my body.

It wasn’t instant. And healing didn’t come without heartbreak. The people who hurt me the most were often the ones who said they loved me. But through that pain, Jesus remained. When I was too weak to stand, He held me up. When I felt unseen and misunderstood, He reminded me who I am.

Fasting taught me to listen. It taught me that adding something life-giving—like stillness, fresh air, worship, or learning—can be just as powerful as giving something up. Jesus is the source of life, and when you invite Him into your day with intention, things shift.

This year, I’m reminded of Proverbs 3:5–6:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Even as I continue learning and growing, I know I can’t lean only on knowledge—I must run to Jesus first. Always.

Fasting has shown me that some of the most powerful transformation happens when we pause, listen, and trust. So whether you’re giving something up or adding something in, do it with the intent to grow closer to Him. You might be surprised by how much you gain.

It’s been rainy so walks have been hard to take but I still like to stand outside and smell the rain anyways!
