Discernment is Spiritual Maturity

Have you ever felt like too many voices are speaking into your life?

Advice seems to come from every direction… friends, family, church, social media, podcasts, even the things we watch or read. Suddenly, it feels like we’re being pulled in several directions at once.

I know I have felt this way many times.

Sometimes, those voices come from well‑intended people. Sometimes, they’re friendships that seem Christian‑like on the surface but lack true spiritual grounding. Other times, it’s noise from co‑workers, influencers, or endless scrolling. The truth is, it’s not just people speaking into our lives; it’s also what we consume.

We often brush it off with, “It’s not that deep,” but I assure you, it is far deeper than we think.

While we may brush it off and say, “it’s not that deep,” I assure you assure, it is far deeper than we think!

What feeds us shapes us. We are nourished not only by what enters our mouths but also by what enters our ears, eyes, and hearts.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…?”
—1 Corinthians 6:19

What we allow inside matters… all of it.

I could easily turn this topic into a whole book because the influences in our lives are countless. But today, I want to focus specifically on correction and counsel.

From personal experience, I’ve learned:
Not everyone in your life is called to lead you, and not every voice deserves access to your spirit.

Even when we wander or listen to the wrong voices, God wastes nothing. He redeems every season. He restores. But why hand authority to voices never meant to guide you in the first place?

So, let’s learn to go to God first in everything. Scripture has been my lifeline, my anchor, and my compass.

Let’s go deeper.

Three Biblical Safeguards for Discernment

1. Do They Bear Good Fruit?

“By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?”
—Matthew 7:16

Jesus makes it so simple: fruit reveals the root.

“Fruit” symbolizes the outcomes of a person’s life, their actions, character, humility, and influence. Outward words may sound good, but what truly matters is the life they live.

Reflection:
Does this person gossip, stir drama, or speak harshly while claiming righteousness? Is their household in chaos while they critique yours?

Spiritual fruit reveals true authority. If the fruit is bitter, the root is unhealthy.

2. Do They Submit to God and His Word?

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
—Isaiah 8:20

If someone speaks on behalf of God but does not truly know Him, that’s a red flag. 🚩

You cannot offer correction while refusing correction from the Father.

Ask yourself:
Do they repent?
Do they walk humbly with Jesus?
Are they rooted in Scripture or just using spiritual language?
Do they serve others? Are they givers or takers?

God’s light exposes the difference between authenticity and performance. Some people sound spiritual but lack relationship. It can look like empowerment wrapped in a shiny bow, but underneath there’s no heart… no truth.

That’s deception. It’s marketing disguised as ministry.

God is not a brand.

Some turn Him into something marketable or formulaic; polished, packaged, and profitable. But God is sovereign, not sellable.

After the Lord spoke to Job, He said:

“I am angry with you and your two friends because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.”
—Job 42:7

Job’s friends sounded spiritual, even eloquent, yet they were wrong. It’s possible to sound religious and still misrepresent God.

Just because someone goes to church doesn’t mean they truly know Him. That should humble every one of us.

3. Are You Rooted Enough to Recognize Deception?

Even Satan quoted Scripture when tempting Jesus in the wilderness.

“Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
—Matthew 4:7

But Jesus was deeply anchored in the Word. He knew His Father’s voice and that was His protection.

When we aren’t rooted in God’s Word, we become easier to sway by charisma, emotion, or persuasion. That’s when discouragement creeps in, and hopelessness follows. We end up in repeated patterns, manipulated by false influences.

When we can’t distinguish God’s voice from the world’s noise, we drift.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
—Proverbs 3:5–6

When Christ is not just a side voice but the center of your life, other influences lose their grip. His wisdom guards you, His Spirit corrects you, and His Word protects you.

So… Is It That Deep?

We often dismiss things casually or chase whatever “sounds good.” But spiritual-sounding advice isn’t always godly. Check the source.

Is it truth? Or performance? Is it opinion dressed in Scripture?

Small influences can shape big decisions. Subtle voices can plant deep roots.

Discernment isn’t paranoia… it’s spiritual maturity.

When it comes to your spirit, your calling, your obedience, and your relationship with God … yes, it is that deep.

Not because of fear, but because of intentional surrender.

Guard your heart, choose your influences wisely, and go to God first in everything.

So, the next time someone tells you, “It’s not that deep,”
you can quietly respond…

“It is, when it touches your soul.”
