Author’s Note:
I saved Vera’s story for last—for good reason. It’s the longest piece I’ve ever written on WordPress, and it stretched me far outside my comfort zone. Eat Up: The Story of Sweet Vera is creepy, strange, and full of mystery. It’s unlike anything I’ve shared before, and I hope you enjoy the eerie ride.

We’ve now reached the final chapter of this creative journey together. What you’re about to read is Chapter One of a five-part series—the last of my reposting, editing, and archiving project. We made it. I’ll continue sharing the remaining chapters until the very end… and then, one final posting.

Thanks for being here, my friends. 🖤

Chapter 1 — Eat Up: The Story of Sweet Vera

Vera Turnball lived alone in a well-kept brownstone. The once quiet cobblestone street in this New York suburb was now filled with busy families, honking cars, and delivery bikes whizzing past. No one paid attention to an old woman on her stoop—not anymore.

But when Vera first laid eyes on this place she now called home—America—she had been just twelve years old.

Vera Turnball came to America with her mother and father, Wallace and Alice Gray. Their homeland was Northumberland, England—a place of low mountains, misty coastlines, and slow-moving days. Vera returned there a few times over the years, but she never again called it home. Her real home, the one that swallowed her up and kept her secret, became the towering stone and steel of New York City.

Everything about New York thrilled her: the noise, the movement, the glittering parties, the perfume-soaked air, the constant urgency pulsing through the streets. The women wore floral dresses and red lipstick, their hair styled high with pins and ribbons. The men in rimmed hats and sharp suits walked like they had somewhere important to be. Vera wanted to be like them—confident, clean, alive.

As a child, she never imagined she’d live a life like theirs. She also never imagined the reason she’d come to America would be so dark.

Like so many, she came by ship, docking at Ellis Island. She remembered the thrill of the Statue of Liberty rising from the sea, her copper glow catching the morning light. Her father promised a new life was waiting. “That statue,” he said, pointing, “proves the past can’t follow us here.”

Vera wanted to believe him. She tried to, even as she caught the quiet, haunted look in her mother’s eyes.

Vera Turnball is an old woman now. She’s been a wife. A widow. She has buried her past in every way she could—except in the one place that matters most.

Because some pasts don’t stay buried.

And hers? Hers still lingers like the scent of something sweet gone sour.

Let’s begin at the true beginning.

Northumberland, England.

Where everything changed for sweet Vera.

Ellis Island
